John 2:23 Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name when they saw the signs which He did.

Discerner of Hearts

A movement came along a few years ago. This movement focused on a person’s testimony and what they had been through in life. They ended with, “I am second.” It meant they put Jesus first in their lives. So many people live in a rough sea, tossed about like a wave. They put their left foot in and take their left foot out. They are not truly committed to Jesus. These are the ones you hear about who leave their “faith.”

Jesus is a discerner of hearts. Many believed in Jesus after performing miracles. In today’s terminology, they were fans. They wanted to see Jesus perform miracles like a circus performer. Or they wanted to be healed from an affliction they were suffering. These people were not truly committed to Jesus being Lord and Savior of their lives.

John 2:24 But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men.

Jesus did not spend time with these types of people. He would not try to instill in them the knowledge He was spreading. Would you try to teach someone something you knew if they weren’t serious? Now, of course, we are not on Jesus’s level, but you understand what I mean. When you lean into Jesus to truly learn, He will lean into you to teach you more.

John 2:25 and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man.

When we reach a mature age in life, most of us know who we are and what we are. Mature being the key word. Jesus had no need of anyone testifying about Him. He knows who He is, and the Father knows. The key question is, do you know who Jesus truly is? If you don’t, take time to pray and ask Him to show you. But don’t play hokey-pokey with Him!

Key Takeaways

  • Many believed in Jesus after witnessing miracles, but their faith was superficial, likening them to fans rather than true followers.
  • Jesus, knowing the hearts of people, did not commit Himself to those who were not serious about their faith.
  • Maturity in faith requires a genuine commitment to learn from Jesus, who reciprocates when we earnestly seek Him.
  • Understanding who Jesus truly is requires reflection and prayer; don’t approach Him lightly.
