John 2:13 Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

Crowded ancient marketplace with scattered coins, animals, vendors, and sunbeams

We forget that Jesus was all man and all God. We see here that, as a Jewish man, the Law required him to go to the Temple for the Passover. Remember that He was sinless and fulfilled the Law. In His holy state, the people around Him were celebrating the Old Testament miracle of the Angel of Death passing over the houses, saving their firstborn from death.

John 2:14 And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers doing business.

The house of God had been turned into the house of money changers. In other words, it was the house of thieves. The outer court was filled with these merchants who were stealing from the poor. The outer court was for non-Jewish people who would want to come and learn about God. So not only were the merchants stealing from the poor, but they were also blocking people from learning about God. God chose His people so they would spread Him to the rest of the world!

John 2:15 When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers’ money and overturned the tables.

Jesus became jealous for His Father’s house. The disrespect for it and God’s people incensed Jesus. Jesus deliberately made himself a whip. Then He drove out the merchants and their animals. Then He kicked over their tables. Can you imagine the scene? One man, the God man, running out a courtyard full of people. The sight would have been awesome for us to see. Why? Because having zeal for God and His business should inspire us!

John 2:16 And He said to those who sold doves, “Take these things away! Do not make My Father’s house a house of merchandise!”

Religious leaders today are doing the same in our houses of worship. Money, power, and pride are driving wolves in sheep’s clothing into our churches. False prophets and unprepared people are fulfilling what Jesus predicted would happen in the Book of Revelation. People are going to church on Sundays to have their ears tickled. The wolves are feeding them googley gook.

Where is our zeal? Will we take a stand? Or will we let unknowing souls be pacified all the way to hell? Do you know the Lion of the tribe of Judah? If you did not realize, the little baby Jesus grew up. He is coming back one day, and every knee will bow. You can bow down now as a saint or later as a judged sinner.
