Ecclesiastes 5:1 Walk prudently when you go to the house of God; and draw near to hear rather than to give the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they do evil.

Be Prudent

There is a saying that I hear from time to time where I live, “If I walk into that church, the walls will fall down.” It means the person doesn’t understand grace. They think that their sin is too great for God to forgive. Of course this is a foolish concept. But there is something that needs to be discussed when entering the house of God. It is far better to listen to God’s word than to foolishly speak out of turn.

People tend to be very vocal these days. There is a lack of common respect for fellow humans in today’s time, even less respect for the holiness of God. The big issue is that they do not understand the evil that they are participating. There is a movement that has started where a group of protesters want to enter a house of worship and disrupt the service with their chants. Without knowing, they are putting nails in their spiritual coffins.

Ecclesiastes 5:2 Do not be rash with your mouth,
And let not your heart utter anything hastily before God.
For God is in heaven, and you on earth;
Therefore let your words be few.

Solomon is still writing from a place of the humanistic view. So why, when he is writing in this style, would he issue a warning? Something interesting that I recently learned might surprise you. Scientists performed lie detector tests on a number of Atheist. When asked if there was a God and they said no, guess what happened? 100% of the proclaimed Atheist showed on the test that they were lying.

Therefore, this test tells us that we all know there is a God in Heaven. We understand that this existence we were given and the earth on which we live was created by an all-mighty God. We are finite and one day, whether we admit it or not, we understand there is an after-life. The issue is we don’t like to be judged for our actions. This is one of the main reasons people proclaim there is not a God.

But know that even Solomon in his most negative writings about this world and this life, understands we will have to answer for our sin. So why make it tougher on ourselves with our words? This is true vanity. Understand this, born once die twice, born twice die once. What have you done with the gift of salvation Jesus has offered all of us?
