Ecclesiastes 1:13 And I set my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under heaven; this burdensome task God has given to the sons of man, by which they may be exercised.

Burdensome Task
We have an entire industry built on the study of different foods, exercises, care products, and anything else you can think of. The reason is to shift our opinions and, therefore, our dollars in a certain direction. Solomon, in the same way, used the wisdom that God blessed him with to seek out anything and everything done under the sun. Why? To satisfy the desires of his flesh. Remember, Solomon is reminiscing on the folly of his life.
The way Solomon performed this task is the same way most humans seek out these things without God. Solomon uses human wisdom, and so do we. The problem is that when we head down the road, we soon find out how burdensome this life can be. Sin beats us down. Fast living ages us quickly. Sin takes the will from us. Burdensome is the right word for this endeavor.
Empty Handed
Ecclesiastes 1:14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and indeed, all is vanity and grasping for the wind.
Unlike most of us, Solomon was in a position to take part in more of these burdensome tasks. We take these tasks in smaller increments. But the results will always end the same way. Futile is the best word to use here, I think. The insane part of this process is that we do not stop with the first slice of futility. No, we take another slice, then another and another. What is the definition of insanity? Doing the same thing over and over but expecting different results.
Have you ever tried grasping the wind? What was the result? Futility. I have heard it said that trying to grasp money is like trying to grasp water. It always slips through your fingers. These two examples are like living life without the power and wisdom of a holy God. They only lead to exasperation. Then we become beaten down and frustrated. No wonder so many of us walk around with a downtrodden look.
Light Burden
Matthew 11:30 “For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
Jesus lets us know how to be less burdened in this life. Through giving your life to Him! His instructions in His Word give us the playbook for this life. Acceptance of His free gift of salvation. Then, following the words of life He gives to us. Who better to learn from than the One who created us?
