Revelation 9:1 Then the fifth angel sounded: And I saw a star fallen from heaven to the earth. To him was given the key to the bottomless pit.

Another star?

Imagine being in a futuristic place as you witness a human like robot doing strange and powerful tasks. You look and do not know how to describe the task or the robot. What do you do? You relate this to your experience and explain what you witnessed in your terminology. This is what is happening as John experiences the prophecies he has witnessed.

Isaiah 14:12 “How you are fallen from heaven, O lucifer, son of the morning! How are you cut down to the ground, you who weakened the nations! Isaiah explains to us the prophecy God gave him as to the fall of Lucifer from Heaven to earth. The verse here in Revelation 9 starts to make a bit more sense now. The star that has fallen from heaven is Lucifer. Fallen is in the past tense. So, this vision starts with a rewind and replay.

What is this bottomless pit?

Jude 1:6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. The bottomless pit is the same terminology as the place called Hades, or as we would say is hell. This is a place that was created for Satan and his demonic angels that were cast from heaven.

Revelation 9:2 And he opened the bottomless pit, and smoke arose out of the pit like the smoke of a great furnace. So, the sun and the air were darkened because of the smoke of the pit. Satan is given the key by God after the trumpet sounded to release his angels. Understand that he was given the key to the place he will someday dwell for the rest of eternity.

What is unloosed?

Revelation 9:3 Then out of the smoke locusts came upon the earth. And to them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. Refer back to the first part of this devotional and understand the imagery part. I do not know what this creature is that is loosed, but it inflicts great pain on the unsealed man for up to five months. Think intense pain and suffering, wishing to die pain.

What we truly need to understand is that we do not have to suffer any of these judgements. Christ has made a way for us to be saved from these sufferings. 1John 4:10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
