Revelation 2:1 “To the angel of the church of Ephesus write, ‘These things says He who holds the seven stars in His right hand, who walks in the midst of the seven golden lampstands.”

Explain the church in Ephesus.

The church in Ephesus was established in a Roman province that we would know as modern day Turkey. Paul played an instrumental role in its foundation. The book of Ephesians establishes that Paul heard of the faith of this church and how Jesus brought them out of their worldly living. Paul thanks Jesus for what He was doing in their midst because they were a major center of commerce with many cultures and religions in their city. The church was started and Christianity flourished.

John was also associated with the church of Ephesus living there in his later life. This church was also mentioned in the book of Acts. Demetrius the silversmith started riots here because the spread of Christianity was so strong it threatened the economic welfare of the craftsmen who made idols. So, the history of this church is strong and great teachers lived and taught here.

What does Jesus say about them in Revelation?

Rev. 2:2-3 “I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you cannot bear those who are evil. And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not and have found them liars; and you have persevered and have patience, and have labored for My name’s sake and have not become weary.” This church is doing good works. They are working to further the kingdom, have patience and cannot stand wickedness. They also faced and still face false teachers. They knew and understood the word of God and called the false teachers out. Overall, they were working hard for Jesus.

But Jesus does call them out for one important thing. They had left their first love! They were working in the church. They were foundational and knowledgeable of Christian principles. They were, from the outside, a strong looking church. But Jesus looks at the inside. He saw that they were drifting away from their personal relationship with Him. Never forget this lesson! Everything we do as Christians is based upon our closeness and love for Jesus. Love God with all your heart, mind and soul.

What is the key take away?

The key take away for me is that although we are called to work for Christ, the most important aspect of our relationship with Him is our relationship. We must foster this with daily prayer, meditation on His word, and reading the Bible daily. The second take away is that if you do not have a relationship with Him, then today is the day to start one. Tomorrow is not promised to us. If we are born twice, then we die once. If we are born once, then we die twice.

Key Takeaways

  • The church in Ephesus, founded by Paul, was a significant center of commerce and Christianity in modern-day Turkey.
  • Jesus acknowledges their good works, patience, and ability to discern false teachers in Revelation 2:2-3.
  • However, Jesus admonishes them for having left their first love, highlighting the importance of a personal relationship with Him.
  • The key takeaway emphasizes nurturing our relationship with Christ through daily prayer, meditation, and Bible reading.
  • For those without a relationship with Him, today is the day to start, as tomorrow is not guaranteed.
