Genesis 19:1 Now the two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them, and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground.

What is compromise?

The definition is a settlement of differences where each party gives up some of their demands to reach a mutual agreement. The word of God is inerrant, infallible and sharper than any two-edged sword. What about what God tells us should we compromise on? But this is what the world would like us to do. We as Christians should always know that we are coming from a position of power. Jesus has conquered death, sin and any other foe that we will ever face.

So, we should never settle for less than the best. But we should understand the world we live in will try and fool us. Satan is the father of lies and his followers follow in his footsteps. Satan makes sin look like a shiny new car. It attracts us and we say let me just put a toe in and feel the temperature. But before we know it, we are in a mile deep.

Where does compromise lead?

Lot was Abraham’s nephew. They came a long way from home on God’s calling of Abraham. But the problem was that God did not tell Abraham to bring Lot with him. But because Lot’s father had died, Abraham could not leave him behind. God blessed them so much that their flocks had multiplied tremendously. It was to the point that the herdsmen of both began to fuss and fight. They had to separate. Abraham gave Lot the choice of which land to take first during the separation. Lot chose the green valley, but this valley was close to Sodom.

Lot was a shepherd. His role in this job was to wander around and let the sheep graze on grass. But as we read the story, every time Lot is mentioned he is getting closer to the sinful city of Sodom. Then in the scripture above, he is sitting in the gate of the city. A place where the elders of the city passed laws and judged between the people. Lot had been sucked into the appearance of a comfortable life. But really, he had been sucked into the sin that was about to be judged by God. This compromise had led Lot to a place of evil and sin.

Compromising on God’s word leads to loss!

We know the end of this story–Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed. But the events leading up to this happening tells us about compromise. The men of the city wanted to take the two angels and abuse them. Lot tried to stop them, but they turned on Lot. The angels actually had to save him. Before the angels saved him, he offered to give his daughters to the men. He was even going to give up his children for the sake of compromise!

In the end, God showed mercy to Him because of the fervent prayer of his uncle, Abraham. But he did not want to leave this wicked city. He had compromised so much of what he was taught and had seen that he did not know right from wrong. This is the true story of compromising God’s word. It leaves us in a place that we do not know up from down. But God’s mercy is shown over and over again. So, stand firm in the word and remember our Lord and Savior has won the war!
