John 15:15 “No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from my Father I have made known to you.”
I remember as a young man growing up in my rural county, working on a farm. This was a very different time, and I started working with this man and his brother when I was nine years old. I was so nervous because I was so young. Both of these men were on the tall and large side. Needless to say, I messed up more than once but these two were some of the most patient people. I worked with both until I was fifteen, and they both taught me great life lessons. But they both came to trust me and treated me like a friend.
Jesus talks about this kind of relationship in this passage. Before we know Him personally, we are servants to our sin. It has us and treats us poorly, but it takes seeing good before we know what bad truly is about. When we come to know Jesus as Savior, we are no longer servants but become His friends. This is a term of endearment. To be called friend by God is truly a wonderful thought. Think of the creator of everything calling you His friend!
The question you need to ask yourself is do you like being a servant? Or do you want to be a friend? I have chosen, by Jesus making it possible, to be called His friend. It is the most important relationship I have. Then, my wife and children. If you understand Him, then you will understand why my first love is God. It is my hope you are His friend also.
