Matthew 9:9 As Jesus passed on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, “Follow me.” So he arose and followed Him.

Have you ever thought about the number of times someone has to tell you something before you do it? Think of when you were a child and your mother told you to clean your room or go take a bath. Did you jump straight up and go complete the task? Or, like me, you decided you would drag your feet because you did not want to do what she said right then. We as men and women tend to want to procrastinate.

I find it truly amazing when I read this scripture. Jesus passed Matthew when he was in his tax booth. He was rich and had the Roman government behind him. He was set for life. Now he gave up being a member of the Synagogue and having friends. But his path was set in life, and he was comfortable. Jesus looked at him and said, “Follow me.” And Matthew arose and followed. This is quite unusual to say the least. This amazes me because I was down to my last chance in this life before I accepted Christ.

Jesus picked twelve ordinary men to follow Him as disciples. He called, and they gave up everything to follow Him. I think Jesus calling Matthew is the example we should have followed. Maybe you did, and I commend you. But I also thank Jesus for being so patient with me and not giving up. I would tell you from personal experience: if you are being called by Him to follow, go straightway. Do not drag your feet. You never know when life ends.
