Matthew 8: 8 The centurion answered and said, “Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed.”
We should admire men and women who have served our country. I remember watching a documentary on World War 2 about General Omar Bradley. To find relaxation during his great times of stress, he would solve calculus problems. He was also known as a G.I.’s general for the leadership of the soldiers he commanded. He was so respected for his concern for his men that after the war he was chosen to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs.
The Centurion in today’s scripture is known for something far greater, his faith. So much so that in the next verse it states, “Jesus marveled.” This Centurion was a leader who had authority. He told his soldiers to go, and they went. He was used to people following his commands. But to tell Jesus just to speak the healing over his servant and it would be done showed he knew the power of Jesus. He, like many, probably witnessed Jesus’s healing touch. He knew there was something special about the person he was making the request from.
Faith is the measure of the trust you show in something or the object of your faith. Would you rather have a huge amount of faith in walking across a lake on a half inch of ice or a little faith in walking on three inches of ice? Hopefully, you would choose a little faith in three inches of ice. You see faith is only as good as the object of that faith. Jesus should be the object of the faith you have. He earned this because of the sacrifice He made for you and me on the cruel cross.
