Judges 6:14-15 Then the Lord turned to him and said, “Go in this might of yours, and you shall save Israel from the hand of the Midianites. Have I not sent you?” So, he said to Him, “O my Lord, how can I save Israel? Indeed, my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.”

Now the Lord has Gideon’s attention. He tells him, “Go in this might of yours.” This is not slap- stick humor. Through Gideons weakness Jesus is telling him the key to his success. It is not because he is a mighty warrior; it is because God has chosen him to do His will. A good point of teaching here is being in the will of God. We often make plans that we are sure we will accomplish. But have we asked God His will in these plans of ours? If God does not will it to happen, then ultimately it will not succeed.

Gideon again, like the majority of us, still does not feel confident in the plans that have been laid out before him. He labels himself like the world would see him. I am from the smallest clan and am the weakest in my clan. Why would you choose someone like me? How often do we see ourselves in the same way? I am too weak, too young, too old or not smart enough. This is the influence of the world on us. But even if that were true, then we must realize who is on our side-the Creator of all things.

Finally, Paul made it clear in 2 Corinthians when God told him,” My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” He is telling us that we only mess things up when we try to do God’s work in our strength. Gideon is the weakest in his clan. But through this weakness who gets the credit and glory? Therefore, trust in God’s will for you even when the odds are against you.
