1 Peter 2:4-6 Coming to Him as a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

Stone has multiple qualities-hardness, density, porosity and cleavage. Jesus is the living stone sent to this earth to save us from the sin that has ensnared us. How is Jesus being called a living stone relevant? First, the quality of hardness. Luke 20:18 tells us, “Whoever falls on this stone will be broken, but on whomever it falls, it will ground him to powder.” Jesus saves us but if not accepted will judge us. We can submit to His grace or be broken by the sin we are guilty of.

Second, there is density of the living stone. Job 11:7-8 “Can you search out the deep things of God? Can you find the limit of the Almighty? They are higher than heaven-what can you do? Deeper than Sheol-what can you know?” The depth of knowledge that Jesus has as God is unsearchable. How can we then put Him in a box and in our own way try and limit Him? This is impossible. If we could understand the ways of God, then what kind of God would He be? This is why the density of His ways are so deep. Because we cannot wrap our finite minds around His purposes.

Thirdly, porosity, meaning it can soak up moisture. Matthew 28:45 Now from the sixth hour to the ninth hour there was darkness all over the land. Jesus hung on the cruel cross. He was in the process of fulfilling His purpose which results in us being saved from the judgment of us by our sin. In these three hours when no one could see, Jesus was soaking up the pain and judgment God the Father was pouring on Him. This was Jesus being the propitiation for us. He paid the price so we can live eternally.

Then, lastly cleavage. The rock has been shaped by the pressure to have usually flat parallel sheets to support other life or hold other material. If we have accepted His gift then we are able to be in the cleft of the Rock and live, then grow in His example. He has made a place for us where we are accepted and nourished. When all these come together it is the greatest plan God has made for us. He planned all along to make this possible. If you do not know Him as Savior, then stop and think today why Jesus is the living rock. It was all for you!
