Psalm 78:35-37 Then they remembered that God was their rock, and the Most High God their Redeemer. Nevertheless they flattered Him with their mouth, And they lied to Him with their tongue. For their heart was not steadfast with Him, Nor were they faithful in His covenant.
As God moved His people through the desert, He cared for them. Even with manna flowing down from the heavens and streams of water flowing from rocks, the people complained. They did not realize that man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. This is the scripture Jesus used when He was being tempted. This was not good enough for the Israelites. They wanted meat. So God, from a powerful wind, made feathered fowl fall down on them. They ate till they were full. But God sent a plague through the bird they were eating and struck many of them down.
See these people were like many of us today. We use words of flattery to get the things we complain about. Our hearts are not towards the Lord. Our hearts are towards our comfort and desires. We want what we want, and we do not care that God has provided so much for us. We do not consider Him when we take our steps throughout the day. We do not honor Him with the first fruits of the labor He allows us to do. Pride arises in us and we think that all we have is through us pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps.
But God knows those of us whose hearts are His. He allows the tares in with the wheat. We may even make it out of this world before we see the punishment for the sin we commit. But like the parable Jesus spoke about the wheat and the tares, when the harvest comes then the tares can be separated from the wheat. Those who know Jesus as Savior will spend eternity with Him. Those who do not will be tossed into the fire. The thing God wants most is our hearts. What is your heart full of?
