John 3:7-8 “Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
Nicodemus did not understand but he was the teacher of Israel. He did not want to take in all the Old Testament scriptures where the Spirit fell upon individuals. Gideon, Moses, David and numerous others. The Spirit was the same but now it was talked about by Jesus. Being born again is possible to us through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit opens our spiritual eyes to Jesus. That is why we only have one sin we cannot be forgiven of, blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. We deny the Spirit’s prompting to who Jesus is.
Like the natural wind, we cannot see the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is part of the Triune Godhead. He goes where He wants; you see the effects but you cannot see Him so you find it hard to understand Him. But if you dig into the scriptures, the Holy Spirit has been there. Genesis 2 tells us the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. On numerous occasions the Holy Spirit fell upon man. Again we cannot know Christ unless prompted by the Holy Spirit.
So, was Nicodemus being disingenuous? Maybe. But more than anything, I believe he was asking in a round about way what we have asked. Are you truly God? If so, how can I know you. Give me answers in the way in which my finite mind can understand. But we do not always get answers that way from God. He wants us to seek Him. Build faith in Him. Trust in Him. Are you at that point today? If not seek, ask and knock. He will answer you!
