John 14:5-6 Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going, and how can we know the way? Jesus said to him, ” I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
Jesus and His disciples are gathered and Jesus knows His time on this earth is coming to an end. He is trying to instill as much of His knowledge into them as possible. They have walked with Him for three years and they, like us, just do not understand. They do not grasp that the One they walk with who they know as the Messiah could go away. He was, in their eyes, supposed to be there to throw the Romans out and rule forever in Jerusalem. They, nor any Jewish person, contemplated that Jesus came for all mankind. He was here to save souls of every nation and color.
He was telling them about where He was going, which was to the Father in heaven. He was taking their sin and all mankind’s sin on His shoulders and making a way possible for all. “Lord, we do not understand where you are going.” Thomas may be known as a doubter, but he asked bold questions. He truly wanted to know. Jesus then makes one of His famous I Am statements. And Jesus makes it very clear to all with this one.” I am the Way.” There is not many ways to heaven but one. It is through Jesus! “I am the Truth.” He is the measuring stick of truth. “I am the Life.” He created life and sustains life.
Make no mistake, Jesus is the Word that was spoken to create all things. He came down from heaven to walk with His people. He loved us so much He took our punishment. There could be no greater love than what He showed to us through His actions. What will you do with this knowledge today?
