Galatians 3:2 This I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
Paul had been in Galatia; he had preached and taught them over a long period pf time. Now he was writing them a letter to encourage them but also to call them out on their lack of follow through. False teachers had also arisen and they were trying to muddy the water. They were trying to teach a false doctrine of circumcision and Jesus. The were trying to bring the law into the peoples Christian walk.
Paul wanted to hear from them. Did you receive the Spirit from works? Is it possible to work our way to heaven? If that were the case would Jesus have had to come, suffer and die for us? It does not pass the common sense test. There is nothing we can do to save ourselves. No amount of work, no amount of money and no amount of good intentions can cut the mustard. There can be only one way!
Jesus made this clear, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” There is no other way to be saved from our deserved punishment except by Jesus. No if’s, and’s or but’s about it. The only way is by coming to Jesus and asking forgiveness. Do not be fooled by false doctrine. Faith comes by hearing–hearing the Word of God. The Word is Jesus. What will you do with Him?
