Psalm 23:5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over.

Being a connoisseur of history, I look at the first statement and am fascinated. You see I have never read about a battle where one side sits down at a table and eats in the presence of their enemy. So for this to happen there must be great faith in the One who set the table to start with. Faith that during a time of stress He will protect you. This is how great our Lord is towards us. He is concerned for our health and well being, all the while upholding and protecting us.

He anoints my head with oil. In the old testament days, anointing the head with oil was a sign of kingship. In the presence of the enemy God is telling them with this action that we are His saints. We belong to Him, and He is not ashamed of us. Do we live unashamed of Him? Do we proclaim to those around us that He is our God? We do fail at times, Peter denied Christ three times. But God was good enough to reaffirm Peter three times after the resurrection. So even though we fail Him, He still loves us and wants a relationship.

Then it is written my cup runs over. He just doesn’t give us a tad of love and goodness. No, this love and goodness overflows. That is what we are to give to those around us the overflow of His goodness. When we do this, we are given the opportunity to convert those enemies to saints like us. Are you ready? Ready for all this goodness, love and grace. Ask, seek and knock and you will receive.
