1 Corinthians 10:23 All things are lawful to me, but not all things helpful; all things are lawful to me, but not all things edify.

We as Christians are no longer under the law. Just as Abraham, Isaac and Jacob were not under the law. We are justified by faith through Jesus Christ. They were justified by faith for believing and following the commands of God. We are not confined to the law that judges on the day of judgment. Does this mean that we should just live like heathens? No. If we are saved by grace then we out of love will live like saints!

Food is good for the body. It gives us energy and satisfaction. But if we gorge on food and over eat then we become sick. Therefore, food is not the problem but our over consumption. This is not edifying. Living outside the will of God is like this. We are not under the law but there is consequence to our actions. It does not benefit us to live this way. We are forgiven but we reap what we sow.

Being forgiven is the greatest gift God has provided to us. We no longer have to walk around with the weight of sin. The law has done its job and pointed us to Christ. But we need to realize we are Christ’s. There is a path we have to walk to grow more in His image. This is called sanctification. But we do not need to be legalist, always pointing out others flaws. When we do this we are lifting ourselves up. We are not worth lifting up. But Christ is and we should be willing to do just that.

Key Takeaways

  • Christians are justified by faith, not bound by the law, yet should live to glorify God.
  • While food is good, over consumption leads to sickness; similarly, living outside God’s will has consequences.
  • Forgiveness is a gift from God, freeing us from the weight of sin and leading us toward sanctification.
  • We should avoid legalism and instead focus on growing in Christ’s image, humbly lifting Him up.
