2 Corinthians 7:9 Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that your sorrow led to repentance. For you were made sorry in a godly manner, that you might suffer loss from us in nothing.

Godly sorrow is written about a lot in the scriptures. Solomon said, “Sorrow is better than laughter, for by a sad countenance the heart is made better.” Paul tells the Corinthians the same in the featured scripture today. Why would sorrow be beneficial to a person? Isn’t the cup that holds your coffee also the cup that was put through the fire? Sorrow is beneficial because it allows the person to be repentant and moldable.

Being repentant and moldable allows God to use you in mighty ways. The word of God convicts your heart. The sorrow from this is like a fire that cleanses. Then we are molded into the vessels God wants us to be. Then we are usable for the kingdom. This is a tried and proven process that has allowed the gospel to be spread over the entire world. Sorrow over sin is the key to understanding. Understanding leads to wisdom, wisdom is by God through the knowledge of Him.

We live in a world that seems to want an easy button. When life is hard or when we become overwhelmed then we want to push this button and make everything better. The flaw in this is that we do not gain the benefits of Godly sorrow. If this does not happen then knowledge of God does not happen. There is no benefit to easy living. There is no salvation. Understand that life was not meant to be lived easily. Life is meant to uncover the goodness of God.
