2 Samuel 9:1 Now David said, ” Is there still anyone who is left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan’s sake?”

Saul was a king that the people wanted. God did not choose him but allowed him to be king. God’s plan was always to be the One who led His people. His people wanted to be like the world around them. They took their eyes off God and put them on the cultures around them. This was never going to end well. People look at the outward but God looks to the heart of a man.

Saul indeed failed to be a king who lived for God. He turned the people further from God and did not follow His commands. This led God to end Saul’s reign and appoint a servant whose heart was true. Enter David. He was a man after God’s own heart. This is what God tells us. Saul became more and more distant from God and was tormented. He sought to kill David and drove him into the wilderness. David fled from Saul for years.

Saul’s son Jonathan was different though. He saw that God’s favor was on David and that he was the next anointed king of Israel. He was David’s best friend and they made a covenant together. Unfortunately Jonathan was killed when his father was slain battling the Philistines. David remembered the covenant and sought to honor his covenant with Jonathan. This showed David’s heart.

Jesus made a covenant through His death, burial and resurrection. He made that covenant with any person who chooses to honor Him as Lord and Savior. We can either live like Saul and persecute God’s chosen or live like David and honor God’s will. The choice is simple. What will you do?
