Matthew 5:44 “But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for he makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust.”

There is a genial saying in the south, “Bless your heart.” This is a nice way of saying someone is doing or acting in a way that shows there poverty of intelligence. The world is full of people who need their hearts blessed. Turn on the television and you will see they are all over the world. This is worrisome.

More worrisome is the escalation of evil in the world today. People seem so angry and want to lash out from that place of anger. What are we called to do with people like this. There is another saying, “Kill them with kindness.” This is an attitude that is about extinct today. But we are called to show the love of God to the world.

I am not saying we are to let people physically attack or abuse us. No there is a time to stand your ground, but there are many off ramps before this time. First, we are to pray for, bless and do good to those who are spiteful and angry. This way they will see what the love of God looks like.

If there is a time when this love is needed it is now. People do not care what you know until they know that you care. Go forth and make disciples of all nations. This is the final command of Jesus in Matthew 28. So go and be the hands and feet of Jesus.
