Hebrews 9:16 For where there is a testament, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.

A testament is a legal document that relates to a persons belongings. In order for the testament to be executed there has to be death of the testator. The person who is passing their belongings on has to have died and someone to leave their belongings to.

Jesus fulfilled this with His death on the cross. What did he leave to be in testate? He left His Word. John 1:1 tells us in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God. Then what he left us was Himself. He did this to testify of His sacrifice and what His sacrifice guarantees.

His guarantee is that if you believe in Him and what His death, burial, and the most important thing, His resurrection, means then you have eternal life with Him. He took the punishment for sin. He conquered death. He is the Author and Finisher of our faith. This is the testament. This is the gift He left to us.

Most people will say this sounds too easy. Remember though who hung from the cross. It was the sinless, perfect Son of God. The Father needed the punishment to be paid. He allowed His Son to pay it. His Son agreed to pay the price and we reap the gift. A steep price to pay and He paid it for us. He loves us more than we can truly realize.
