Galatians 3:2 This only I want to learn from you. Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
We love to accomplish something through our efforts. We think that the only way we are going to get ahead in life is to work hard. Our houses get bigger and our toys get more shiny. We do this to show that we are smarter and have more intestinal fortitude than other people. If it can be done we will find a way.
This is a trait we also link to making it into the presence of God. The Jewish people in Jesus’s day had added over six hundred laws to the ten commandments. To them the law saved. But the thing is if they had taken a closer look they would realize that they didn’t keep the ten God had given them.
Jesus came and died to take the punishment for our sins. His sacrifice was to allow us a way to spend eternity with Him. We can’t work our way into heaven. The law is to show us we need a Savior. Our works are like filthy, bloody rags to Him. They are tainted with sin.
How can anyone know this unless there is someone to spread this word? Our job is to let others know of the grace and mercy available to us through Jesus. He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Him. If we try and add works it is like saying His death was not enough. And His death was more than enough!
