James 3:2 For we all stumble in many things. If one does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body.
To error is human, to deny is folly. We need to stop and think about this statement. There is only one who has walked this earth and is sinless. His name is Jesus and He lived about two-thousand years ago. This perfect walk qualified Him to be our Savior.
I have a terrible memory of a man I was witnessing to on his death bed. Now this man was a lifelong member of a church. He tithed his money and worked in the church to help others. On his death bed he told me all this. I said that was good work but what about Jesus? This question stumped him.
“What do you mean? ” He asked. I went through the gospel with him. He looked at me with a surprised expression. “I have not lived a life that I feel I need saving from!” He responded. I spent the better part of two days witnessing to him. Telling him about Jesus. His only response. “I just do not need someone to save me from my work. my work will get me to heaven.”
Sadly, this man died without confessing Jesus as Lord. We are sinful beings. James writes about this in great detail in his letter. We are not perfect, we need a Savior. If you, like the man in my story, feel that good works gets you to heaven then read, Isaiah 64:6. May you know the mercy and grace of a loving God.
