Matthew 5:4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Mourning is a natural part of life. In living we know death exist and will face it one day. We grieve those we have lost and worry about facing that day ourselves. God never intended for us to face death. We were not created to face that cruelty. Death came about from us sinning against Him. God cannot tolerate sin so there had to be a terrible penalty for it.

Why does this verse above then say those who mourn are blessed? Well, it is not talking about mourning over death. It is talking about mourning over sin. Sin that has permeated us and those around us. They see sin for what it is and are overcome with sorrow. They are saved from their sin by the Lord Jesus Christ and see others who are not. They mourn.

This idea is further enhanced by the last phrase. They shall be comforted. Who is comforting them? God Himself. He sees our tears and wipes them from our cheek. He loves us and wants the best for us. We are His children. We give ourselves to Him and He cares for us. Again, we were never intended to face death and the consequences of spiritual death.

If you want true comfort and want to spend eternity in the presence of a loving God, then turn to Him. Ask forgiveness. Acknowledge Him as Lord. You will be blessed!
