Matthew 5:39 “But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.”

There is an old story of a former boxer turned priest. One day a guy bumps into him on the street and gets mad. He strikes the priest and the priest smiles and turns the other cheek. The man strike the other cheek and the priest smiles and rolls his sleeves up. “I have done what my Lord has told me to do. Now there is no further instruction.” Then he precedes to beat the tar out of the man.

This makes us smile because no matter how much we try, the flesh still has a strong pull upon us. Of course, when we study this passage of scripture we find it is not truly talking about fending off a physical attack. No this is a story about being offended. If a Jewish man actually struck another Jew like this it would result in a hefty fine. Why? Because of the insult of the act.

What this teaches us is we should be to a point not to let the insult affect our Christian walk. Jesus Himself was maligned many times during His ministry. He was not angered but shrugged it off and continued His work. He had His mission and purpose in mind. Just like Him, we have a mission and a purpose, we should focus on that.

Satan will often use people to insult and malign us to take us away from Gods will for us. We should be mature enough to turn the other cheek and move on for Gods glory. People will try us and do it again. But we never know when we will be used to bring them to the knowledge of our Glorious savior.
