Marl 11:33 So they answered and said to Jesus, “We do not know.” And Jesus answered and said to them, ‘Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
Jesus was walking into the temple and He was interrupted by the chief priest, the scribes and the elders. They had witnessed and heard of the miracles Jesus was doing. If they were really who they claimed to be, then they would have known who Jesus was. The entirety of the old testament was about Him.
The problem was they were more interested in earthly power than heavenly blessings. They knew who Jesus was but their pride and lust for greed did not allow them to say it. Jesus knew this because he knows mans heart. They had become the sin that He came to destroy. He wished they would turn to Him but they refused.
They inquired of Him by what power He was performing miracles and teaching. He being the ultimate teacher asked a question Himself. Was the baptism of John the Baptist from men or from Heaven? Being sinful and fearing the people who were listening they refused to answer. Either answer they gave besides the one they did would have led them to admitting who Jesus was or making the people mad. The loss of power would have come with a true answer.
Jesus upon hearing this, answered them back in the same fashion. They were not being true to the God in which they claimed they served. See that is the catch. If you play games with God then you are in danger of Him closing you out! He holds everything in His hands even your very breath. He desires an open heart and mind. If true questions are asked then true answers should be given.
If anyone honestly asked questions about the existence of God, then they will be honestly met by a loving Jesus. He would knock the scales from your eyes and let you truly see. The hang up is some do not want a God. They want to rule their lives. The problem is eternal separation is waiting for those who deny Him. So be truthful in asking today. It hopefully will lead you to eternal life with Him.
